This painting is inspired by the legendary figure of Atlas. According to mythology, Atlas held up the sky with his hands and head, until he was petrified by Perseus, who showed him Medusa's head as punishment.
Thus, Atlas turned into the mountain range of the same name in northern Africa. The artist was inspired by the statue of Atlas Farnese, which is located in the Baths of Caracalla and is today kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
The painting bears the imprint of the strength and beauty of this mythical figure, enhancing his majesty through the use of high-quality materials and careful details.
