According to mythology, Atlas holds the sky with his hands and head. He was petrified by Perseus, who showed him the head of Medusa to punish him so Atlas transformed into the mountain range of the same name which is located in northern Africa. 
The artist was inspired by the statue of Farnese Atlas found in the Baths of Caracalla, now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
